Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich with peppers and onions is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time!!!! Mainly because it’s so darn good and it does bring back the best childhood memories of times with my Dad. We recently went to the Great Geauga County Fair and one of the many food items we got was a Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich. It was funny, the sandwich, in my mind, tasted the same as when I was a teenager. Food is such a great way to bring back all those happy memories.
How to make a Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich
Amy and I decided we had to share how to make this fun fair sandwich. Yes, this is a great memory for both of us since I always made Amy get one of these sandwiches whenever we went to the fair. Also, I’ve been making it at home since she was a little girl.
First thing, make sure to get a good Italian sausage. We usually buy Hot Italian sausage links but Mild Italian Sausage will also work. Another one of our favorites is a bratwurst with onions and peppers.
Cooking the Sausage
Heat a Tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. After about 30 seconds add the Italian sausage links to the pan. Brown the sausage on all sides, this takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
While the Italian Sausage is cooking slice the onion, red and green bell peppers.
If you want it really spicy chop a habanero like we did or add a few flakes of crushed red peppers. This is the best part of this Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich you can make it really spicy, a little spicy, or no spice at all. Now, I personally believe it has to have some kick just to make it that great tingle flavor in every bite. Don’t worry, if you’re not into the heat, the sandwich is still really good if it’s mild. Just do whatever makes you happy!!!
Now, once the Hot Italian Sausage is done. Remove it from the pan and set aside while the onions and peppers start to cook. I like to take the temperature of the sausage just to make sure it’s done all the way in the middle. Just take a thermometer in one end of the sausage and check the temp.
After removing the sausage add a Tablespoon of oil to the pan. Then add the sliced onions and peppers. Toss them around to mix and cook for 5 minutes or so until they start to soften.
Once the peppers start to cook add the sausage back in and add a cup of water. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes or so until the peppers and onions have the consistency you want. The onions and peppers should be soft and really flavorful. BTW – When making this Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich the house smells really good when this is cooking.
This Hot Italian Sausage can be served on a bun or plain with just the sausage and peppers (no bun).
